For Sonny We found you unexpectedly some ten years ago, A rescued dog with a heart aglow. A Staffy you were, misunderstood But you broke the mould and made our lives good. With a wag of your tail, so full of cheer, You proved love’s power year after year. To friends and family, you showed with pride, There’s affection and joy in the breed they’d denied. Oh, mischievous Sonny, your antics were gold, Stealing food like a bandit, so bold. A chocolate orange, a tart or meat, No snack was safe from your sneaky feet. In the most inconvenient places you black coat would gleam, Always laid out like a seal in the nearest sunbeam. We always knew you were there by your sounds like a pig, Your belly when pears were ripe, was always so big. But let’s not forget those incredible farts, A trumpet you played from the depths of your heart. Leaping on the sofa, your timing so sly, Leaving us laughing (and gasping) nearby. Through fields and streets, we shared our days, Your dark wonky eyes a comforting gaze. We gave you a life filled with love and care, A bond so deep, no words can repair. Now the house feels empty, the space a bit cold, But the memories shine, recalled until old. We remember with fondness, soon we won’t cry As we’ll meet again by the river, in the sky.
